Evangeline Booth (1865-1950) distinguishes herself from the other Booth writers, writing in a style that is uniquely emotive and expressive. Ever the dramatist and poet, Evangeline writes as she would speak. When reading her works it is easy to imagine oneself in New York’s Centennial Memorial Temple in the 1930s observing Evangeline on stage as the “Commander in Rags”. Along with her exceptional artistry, Evangeline was a gifted administrator and chief among her many achievements was the expansion of The Salvation Army across the United States. Her nearly three-decade long career as the U.S. National Commander was crowned with her election by the High Council as the 4th General of The Salvation Army and the movement’s first female leader.
